12:12 Tune of the Day: Stephanie Says — Velvet Underground
Posted By Amanda Lee on August 19, 2009
Around this point in the summer, I start to get really, really sick of everything. Humidity. Frizzy hair. Sweat-soaked sundresses, melting mascara, and funky flip-flop feet. I’m ready to pull out my textured tights and my crocheted scarves, carry a perpetual mug of warm apple cider, and shoot photos of falling leaves and grey skies and boys [or dogs] bundled into epic coats.
So of course, my annual fall playlist is back in rotation. Which means among the Grouper, the Summer Sun, and the Silver Jews, I’m hearing a ton of Velvet Underground.
“Stephanie Says” is lush, melancholic, and dense, with enough whimsy—chimes and strings that grow and ramble and then degenerate into tremolos—to keep the track from becoming too dark. And without that, it might have tottered on the edge of a playlist better suited for winter, not fall. So cold in Alaska, indeed.
