12:12 Tune of the Day: Cease And Seckle — Born Jamericans
Posted By Ben W. on October 27, 2009
OK, so the Born Jamericans were not as hard and violent as many of their dancehall contemporaries. But please do not think it’s time to go comparing them to Snow or anything.
Yeah, Shine is adding some pretty straight-ahead American pop/R&B touches with his singing. But this is legit Jamaican-influenced (even if they were technically born in America) dancehall. Notch is a credible reggae rapper. And I mean, come on, the song is called “Cease And Seckle” — not exactly the king’s English.
(For the record, “Cease And Seckle” basically means settle down, relax, no need to fight here tonight, please. I think.)
(For the record, again, can we agree that this has to be one of the best 20 basslines in the history of music? Perhaps?)
All week we’re highlighting long-lost dancehall classics from when reggae went rap — 1991-1995 — in the 12:12 Tune of the Day feature. Click here for Monday’s blast of Supercat.
