12:12 Tune of the Day: Go Places — New Pornographers
Posted By Amanda Lee on October 15, 2009
Upon first listen, “Go Places” resembles a drunken wedding carol gone wrong. Its verse is written in intervals that sound like the product of a sound check recorded and set to a beat—no resemblance to any melody you’ve ever heard—and its chorus settles into a lazy major-chord arpeggio. Its tumbling, unintuitive melody and head-spinning strict adherence to waltz tempo are a perfect fit on the band’s 2007 release, Challengers, which departed from the dense and driven math-rocky, quirky powerpop and settled into mellower tempos and more thoughtful melodies.
