My Favorite 75 Albums Of 2009 – Dec. 4

It’s Day Four of the Great 2009 Album Advent Calendar Countdown, and I wish I had better news.

Unfortunately we’ve yet to reach the part of the countdown where I start discussing albums I actually like. I mean, today’s trio is decent enough. They each have really strong individual moments.

But as complete, start-to-finish records?

Eh.

66. Kingdom Of Rust – Doves

The Doves have yet to match the atmospheric beauty of their 2000 debut Lost Souls. Since then, each Doves record has been good for a few great singles, some very nice guitar effects and a bunch of other not-so-memorable moments. This album continues that trend, only this time the great singles aren’t even that great.

65. Get Guilty – A.C. Newman

I thought the last New Pornographers album, Challengers, indicated a looming dearth of good song ideas for Canada’s favorite prolific popster. And this record only confirms my suspicions. A.C. Newman — the indie king of melody for most of this decade — is running out of tunes.

64. Hands – Little Boots

Pretty girls singing catchy songs over glossy synthesizer productions became its own genre of pop music in 2009. Victoria Hesketh aka Little Boots isn’t the best of the bunch — she lacks any dominant defining characteristic onto which fans can latch. What she does have though is a handful of top-shelf singles, most notably “New In Town.”

Check back tomorrow for Day 5 of the Advent calendar countdown. We’ll be listing three albums every day from now through Christmas when we get to No. 1.
