My Favorite 75 Albums Of 2009 – Dec. 11

We’re back with three more albums today on the Great 2009 Album Advent Calendar Countdown. This is the part of the countdown where it starts to get tough to write about the records in question.

You can’t rip them as being depressingly disappointing. They’re not bad records, after all.

But you can’t rant and rave about how they are the single greatest contribution to Western culture since Mozart. Because, you know, we are still in the 40s here on the list.

So, click “more…” Read on. But be forewarned – you will find no extreme declarations. Just some boring words, with some boring punctuation. Sorry.

45. 200 Million Thousand – The Black Lips

It’s raw. It’s sophomoric. It’s more-than-occasionally more-than-a-little offensive. It’s moronic. It’s a hell of a lot of fun. And it’s The Black Lips’ best record album yet.

44. Now We Can See – The Thermals

I can’t help miss the concept-album format of 2006’s fantastic The Body, The Blood, The Machine, which found Hutch Harris and co. marrying great punk-pop tunes with terrific, angry lyrics. On this album, I can’t really figure out what any of the songs are about at all. The good news is they still have plenty of those ace punk-pop tunes.

43. Scars – Basement Jaxx

The Basement Jaxx guys may be guilty of attempting a few too many genre experiments (especially on the album’s second half) without high-quality songwriting as a foundation. Fortunately, the singles (“Scars,” “Raindrops” and “Twerk”) are good enough to overshadow the weak moments.

Check back tomorrow for Day 12 of the Advent calendar countdown. We’ll be listing three albums every day from now through Christmas when we get to No. 1.
