I love albums. I love countdowns. And I love Advent calendars.

So I was thinking. What if we combined all three?

Just imagine the possibilities. Amazing, right?

Well, I think it’s time to give it a shot. I give you the Great 2009 Album Advent Calendar Countdown!!!

MY FAVORITE 75 ALBUMS OF 2009 DAY ONE

75. Man Of Aran (Soundtrack) — British Sea Power

BSP followed last year’s Mercury Prize-nominated Do You Like Rock Music? (No. 1 on my 2008 albums list) with a bit of a curveball. They re-scored a silent documentary from 1934 about daily life on the rugged, isolated island of Aran. Bonus points for such a wholly unique project, but truth be told, the music only occasionally lives up to the beauty of the film.

74. March Of The Zapotec/Holland EP — Beirut

Zach Condon gave us an album’s worth of material in the form of two EPs packaged together. Zapotec proved a tired rehash of his standard ethnic cuisine. Surprisingly, it was the synthesizer explorations on Holland that were of more interest.

73. Changing Horses — Ben Kweller

As evidenced by the album title, Ben Kweller is a new man on this record, ditching power pop for alt-country. Also evidenced in the title, his lyrics and ideas are all pretty much recycled country-western cliches. But when you have golden pipes like this kid, even recycled cliches sound pretty damn good.

Check back tomorrow for Day 2 of the Advent calendar countdown. We’ll be listing three albums every day from now through Christmas and we get to No. 1.
