My Favorite 75 Albums Of 2009 — Dec. 12

It’s the 12th Day of Christmas, so let’s see what my true love gave to me…

Three albums that could not possibly sound more different from one another.

42. Ghostdini The Wizard Of Poetry In The Emerald City — Ghostface Killah

If the idea of Ghostface playing the role of Dr. Love sounds strange, you need to think again. He’s among the best rappers ever when it comes to getting down to the raw emotion of a situation. So it makes perfect sense that he’s made an entire album devoted to discussing love and relationships. And it’s good. He’s funny and insightful, and the beats, emphasizing 70s soul samples, are consistently good.

41. Yesterday And Today — The Field

This is not an album I listen to in any mood. The Field’s songs develop slowly, revealing only subtle changes in shade and texture over the course of their often-10-minute lengths. Which makes it perfect music with which to unwind and de-stress. Yesterday And Today only approaches 2007’s front-to-back amazing From Here We Go To Sublime in isolated moments. Those moments — especially the fantastic four-part title track — make this another excellent release from one of the decade’s best instrumental electronic artists.

40. The Duckworth Lewis Method — The Duckworth Lewis Method

Leave it to Neil Hannon, of The Divine Comedy, to think this was a good idea. He teamed with Thomas Walsh, of Pugwash, to make an album all about the wonderful sport of cricket. Yep. Seriously. So it isn’t surprising that much of music is as traditionally British as traditionally British Britpop can get. What is surprising is how well the Duckworth Lewis Method pull the concept off. Who knew cricket could be this entertaining?
