My Favorite 75 Albums Of 2009 — Dec. 14
Posted By Ben W. on December 14, 2009

Day 14 finds us inching closer to the Top 30 Albums of the Year.
We’ve got a pleasant surprise, a disappointment and an album that sounds exactly as expected.
36. Junior – Royksopp
Yet another consistently pleasing release of electronic gems from Royksopp. There’s nothing here that will shock or startle you; nothing to make you reconsider pop music’s place in the world. Just a bunch of really solid songs.
35. Ignore The Ignorant — The Cribs
The last two Cribs albums are among my favorite of the decade. So imagine my excitement when I learned legendary guitarist Johnny Marr was joining the fold for album No. 4. Next, imagine my disappointment when album No. 4 didn’t quite fulfill my expectations. Marr fits in flawlessly, and the songs are Cribs-ey and catchy. The problem is the production. It’s too big, too full, too standard, too professional. The Cribs’ vitality and amateurish spunk gets washed away in the cash grab.
34. Wall Of Arms — The Maccabees
This is a surprisingly satisfying second album from a band whose first three years were only notable for producing one of the most annoying songs of all-time (the nauseating “Toothpaste Kisses“). This record is melodic, arty and full of great drumming. The only question is to whom do we credit for this sophomore uptick? The band? Or Arcade Fire, who very obviously influenced — if not drew up the note-for-note blueprint — for this sound? I don’t know. Maybe it doesn’t matter. A good record is a good record.
