My Favorite 75 Albums Of 2009 — Dec. 15
Posted By Ben W. on December 15, 2009

December 15 on the Great 2009 Album Advent Calendar Countdown is a day for electronica.
To be specific, British electronica.
My tastes, as usual, run toward the poppier side of things. So we do not have, by any means, hardcore techno artists here. But it’s an interesting array of styles. All use electronically manipulated beats as the foundation for their music, but then build upon the rhythms in wildly different ways.
33. Ready For The Weekend — Calvin Harris
This is another record that improved in my mind that more I heard it. At first I thought Harris concentrated on two or three singles and padded the rest of the record with filler. But now I see that’s not the case. Quite the opposite, actually. This album appears to have been designed as an absolute assault of dance-pop singles. Every hook leaps out of the speakers. Every song seems primed for radio play. And while that can make for a slightly exhausting listen, it also means this album is a pretty exciting dance-pop explosion.
32. A Brief History Of Love — The Big Pink
The much-hyped British band doesn’t sound like the future to me. They sound very much like the past — combining big beat electronica circa 1998 with noise-rock guitar textures a la Jesus And Mary Chain or My Bloody Valentine. When the sound and songwriting connect, though, as on singles “Dominos” and “Velvet,” it’s a thrill worth all the hype.
31. Temporary Pleasure — Simian Mobile Disco
Simian Mobile Disco’s second proper record wasn’t loaded with the obvious hit singles of their first. But it’s a more consistent listen, with all the songs and sounds presented in a unified production. Very strong sophomore effort.
