My Favorite 75 Albums Of 2009 — Dec. 5
Posted By Ben W. on December 5, 2009

Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to announce to you, right now, today, at this very moment…
The winner…
Of the 2009 Your Album Was So Disappointing I Cried For A Week After I Bought It Award…
Is…
63. Further Complications — Jarvis Cocker
The math was too good to fail. X (Jarvis Cocker’s solo debut, Jarvis, in 2007 was among the finest work of his career) + Y (he enlisted super-producer-genius Steve Albini to record his new record) = Z (the new Jarvis Cocker album was gonna be awesome!) Right? Right??!?!?!? Wrong. This album is weak. Cocker’s jokes aren’t funny anymore. It all seems put on, like he’s writing songs he thinks Jarvis Cocker is supposed to write. His sexual come-ons are stale and borderline creepy; his songs tired and tuneless. And the raw rock-oriented production suits neither his songs nor his voice. In short, a colossal disappointment. And yes, I’m still sniffling back tears just writing about it six months later.
62. Ray Guns Are Not Just The Future — The Bird And The Bee
This album falls into an uncomfortable middle ground between pop and popular. It’s not quite radio-friendly enough to compete with Lily Allen and Lady Gaga. Nor is it high-art electronica the likes of The xx or The Big Pink. Instead, it’s simply a nice, solid pop album full of nice, solid pop songs.
61. The Love Language — The Love Language
Stu McLamb’s lo-fi, home-recorded debut won’t win anypoints for production values or originality. But it more than makes up for those shortcomings with homespun charm and consistently strong songwriting.
Check back tomorrow for Day 6 of the Advent calendar countdown. We’ll be listing three albums every day from now through Christmas when we get to No. 1.
