The cool kids go to the thrift store to get old, ratty, retro threads at bargain basement prices.
Me?
I try, but I always manage to get it wrong.
I went to the Goodwill the other day, browsed the aisles, deliberated, made my choice and headed to the checkout with a giddy smile.
I was buying a 20-year-old hardcover [...]

Yo La Tengo’s new album Popular Songs is poorly named. At least by half.

Andrea Reeves was kind enough to drop by and give us today’s 12:12 Tuner:
I first heard the song “Home” whistling along to a closing scene in NBC’s fabulous new show “Community.”
Not my usual way of finding new music. But hey, I grabbed my nearby laptop computer, hit the rewind button on the DVR and typed [...]

Sad news this week in the indie rock world. Prolific Brooklyn-based drummer Jerry Fuchs died after falling down an elevator shaft.
I can’t claim to be an expert here at all, but apparently he played with a ton of bands, including Maserati, The Juan Maclean, !!!, LCD Soundsystem and MSTRKRFT. Honestly, I was really only familiar [...]

British Sea Power is my favorite band working these days.
They just are.
And if you question me or tell me I’m wrong, I will make fun of your clothes and microwave your cat.
Try me.

THE BLOODSUGARS
Your Almost Four Stars editors caught up with The Bloodsugars’ brand of catchy can’t-help-but-dance pop music during the weekend of Midpoint Music Festival, where they rocked the hell out of the KnowTheatre. We immediately marked the calendar to shake our asses at their show tonight at the Northside Tavern. Earlier this week I caught [...]

We looked at new material from Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas Monday. So let’s keep that theme going — what happens when one of the decade’s best bands goes on hiatus?
Today’s case study: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Alec Ounsworth.

The opening music for “Doctor Who” is classic and iconic and wonderful and my favorite TV show theme ever.
What’s even better than the music?
The story behind how it came to be.

One of the most influential people I’ve ever met gave me this album during the time of my life that was undoubtedly the saddest, and it stuck with me and became the soundtrack to the happiest.

So here is the new Strokes — I mean Julian Casablancas — single. Thanks for waiting.
Remember back in 2001 when Is This It felt like the beginning of something special? The first glimpse of what would go down as one of rock’s classic bands?
Little did we know that eight years on, the mastermind behind the [...]
